What is CROAC?
We worked with the University of Manchester on CROAC, an app that allows the identification of frog species from mobile device recordings taken during field studies.
The app has the ability to record short sequences of live frog calls then analyse these recordings to identify the frogs that are present in the recording. The app has an associated frog database which facilitates display of information on the identified frog species and any calls saved.
Why is it Needed?
The app is intended for use in the field, and allows users with limited knowledge of frogs to determine which frogs are present in an area based upon their calls alone.
As most field studies are carried out at night, visual sightings of frogs is problematic. Therefore CROAC provides the ability to identify a frog through sound only.
